When people think of life coaches, they often imagine someone who has all their shit together. Why else would someone trust a coach to help them change their life? While this is logical, keep in mind that the preacher is not free of sin, the doctor is not free from unhealthy habits and the police don’t always follow the laws they enforce. Your life coach, or spiritual advisor, is working through their own fears and challenges. The flawed preacher, doctor and life coach can still provide effective guidance and assistance to you. Spirit works through each of us in some form. Ultimately, it is their deep and sincere desire to help others that will make their service valuable and beneficial to those needing or seeking assistance. There are so many Spiritual advisors and Life Coaches practicing today. It can be hard to find the right one. Here are some guidelines and considerations that may be helpful to you when working with a coach:
- Are you receiving the information and guidance that you need to improve your life?
- Are you making the desired changes and improvements in your life and meeting your goals?
- Would you recommend this coach to someone else?
- Do you resonate with their style of helping you? Are they too blunt, pushy and demanding, or are they motherly and nurturing?
- Do they follow up with you or leave you on your own and wait for you to contact them?
- Not everyone will have years of experience. This doesn’t mean they can’t help you. We all have to start from somewhere. They may not have been a life coach for long, but they have lots of experience being the go-to person in their family and friend group for guidance and advice during difficult times and traumatic events. This isn’t something they can put on their resume. Some people have a natural gift for helping and uplifting others and this quality will show in their interactions with their clients. So, don’t overlook the newbies.
- Is their Spirituality in alignment with yours? If this is important to you and you would like to incorporate your religion and spiritual practice into your coaching session, check their website, blog or Instagram. Some coaches and advisors make it clear what their spiritual practice is.
- Is their sexual orientation, gender and race important to you? It’s perfectly alright if it is. You do not have to police yourself and be politically correct when you are looking for a life coach or spiritual advisor. The more comfortable you are with your coach, the better your progress will be.
Ease into your coaching relationship before you fully commit to a long-term plan and spend lots of money. Make sure you are ready to do the work that is required of you. Never give your power away to anyone to “fix” you. You are responsible for your own growth and development. If your coach is crossing boundaries and taking too much control of your process, let them know. If they are doing a good job, let them know. Good communication is key to your success with your life coach.
May you have much success with accomplishing your dreams and goals.
